Organic Transformations Enabled by Nickel Catalysis
In organic synthesis, constructing molecular frameworks through carbon–carbon (C–C) bond formation is fundamental. Transition‑metal catalysis enables a wide range of C–C bond‑forming transformations, providing efficient and selective access to valuable organic molecules. By leveraging catalytic pathways that are inaccessible in the absence of a metal catalyst, transition‑metal‑mediated reactions have expanded the repertoire of methods available for C–C bond construction. Our research focuses particularly on developing nickel‑catalyzed reactions for organic synthesis. First‑row transition metals such as iron and nickel possess accessible 3d orbitals in their valence shells; because the energies of these orbitals are closer to those of the valence orbitals of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen than those of heavier 4d/5d congeners (e.g., palladium and platinum), we regard them as intrinsically promising catalysts for promoting bond formation.

Organic Electrochemistry Using Plasma
In recent years, low‑temperature (non‑thermal) plasmas that can be generated at or near atmospheric pressure have attracted considerable attention. In contrast to conventional plasma generation under high vacuum, these systems allow direct irradiation of liquid substrates with low boiling points under near‑ambient conditions. Such plasmas are being explored for surface modification with potential applications in medical and industrial settings. By contrast, within organic synthesis there has been virtually no precedent for applying plasma to promote intermolecular reactions between two different molecules.
We reasoned that if the reactive species in argon plasma—the argon radical cation (Ar•+) and electrons (e⁻)—could be harnessed as an oxidant and a reductant, respectively, it should be possible to activate two distinct molecules in situ and induce their selective coupling. Building on this concept, we are establishing plasma organic electrochemistry as a new scholarly domain and developing catalysis‑driven methodologies for organic synthesis.

Research on employing organic molecules as active components—such as diodes and transistors—has advanced rapidly. However, significant challenges remain before fully integrated molecular devices can be realized. For example, a true molecular analogue of a solenoidal coil, one of the canonical passive elements, has yet to be achieved. This gap stems from hurdles unique to such targets: the difficulty of designing and synthesizing fully three‑dimensional, π‑conjugated helical molecules; the necessity of preparing and isolating optically pure (enantiomeric) forms; and the demand for precise control over anisotropic electrical conduction.
In this project, we synthesize π‑conjugated, helically chiral oligopyrin scaffolds. Within the helically chiral field constructed by intramolecular hydrogen bonding and covalent linkages, we aim to elucidate how charge carriers—electrons or holes—propagate along the helical pathway. The ultimate goal is to establish structure–transport relationships that will guide the deployment of these molecules as functional materials, including prospective molecular‑scale solenoids.
